HIV exposure law unjustly applies sex offender status, advocates say
In 2014, Aaliyah, 20 years old at the time, was arrested for prostitution. Police discovered she was HIV positive and arrested her again, charging her with “attempted intentional exposure to AIDS.” Desperate to get out of jail, Aaliyah pleaded guilty. She says nobody told her that it would mean spending the next 15 years as a registered sex offender.
