A Hamilton County man is charged with three counts of criminal exposure to HIV after spitting and throwing blood on three deputies.

An arrest report says deputies arrived at X’s home in Harrison on June 3.

X had lacerations to his left arm. When a second deputy entered the home, he began spitting and throwing blood from his wound on the deputies.

Deputies say he slammed the front door, leaving deputies outside. Eventually he reopened the door, and deputies were able to secure pocket knives found in the home.

The arrest report says X become extremely combative, but deputies were able to place him in handcuffs.

While being escorted to a patrol vehicle, he continued to spit on deputies while screaming that he had HIV. While deputies continued to apply pressure to his wounds while waiting for EMS to arrive, he continued to spit at them.

All three deputies were exposed to bodily fluids and were treated at Erlanger for potential exposure.

Dispatch noted for deputies to use precautions during the call because X was HIV positive.

HIV cannot be transmitted through spit, but only by certain body fluids. You can learn how HIV is spread through the official U.S. Government website.
