Two people arrested for HIV-infected organ transplants
Rio de Janeiro – Police in Rio de Janeiro arrested two people on Monday and are looking for two others as part of an operation investigating the transplantation of HIV-infected organs to six patients, the police said.
The agents are serving arrest warrants in the metropolitan area of the Brazilian city against several employees of PCS Lab Saleme, the private laboratory responsible for the ruling, who are accused of criminal association, forgery and sanitary infringement.
Among those arrested is the laboratory’s partner, gynaecologist Walter Vieira, who signed one of the medical reports that led to the transplant of the infected organs, local media reported.
The director general of the specialised police, André Neves, said during a press conference that there had been a ‘breach of quality control’ by the laboratory in order to increase its profit margin.
Instead of testing on a daily basis, the lab started testing on a weekly basis, which increased the probability of failure, according to Neves.
The medical analysis centre was contracted last December by the regional health secretariat through a tender for the transplant programme.
Following the outbreak of the scandal last Friday, health authorities ordered the preventive closure of the laboratory, as well as the retesting of all tested material and an audit of the public health system.
According to the ministry, this is an ‘unprecedented situation’ in the state of Rio’s transplant service, which has saved the lives of more than 16,000 people since 2006.
Health minister Nísia Trindade said on Friday that all necessary assistance will be provided to those affected and their families, and stressed the government’s commitment to guaranteeing ‘the safety, efficiency and quality’ of the national transplant system.
Dos personas apresadas por trasplantes de órganos infectados con VIH
Río de Janeiro.- La Policía de Río de Janeiro detuvo este lunes a dos personas y busca a otras dos en el marco de una operación que investiga el trasplante de órganos infectados con VIH a seis pacientes, informó la institución.
Los agentes cumplen órdenes de prisión en el área metropolitana de la ciudad brasileña contra varios empleados del PCS Lab Saleme, el laboratorio privado responsable por el fallo, que son acusados de asociación criminal, falsificación e infracción sanitaria.
Entre los detenidos figura el socio del laboratorio, el ginecólogo Walter Vieira, quien firmó uno de los dictámenes médicos que llevó al trasplante de los órganos infectados, apuntaron medios locales.
El director general de la Policía especializada, André Neves, aseguró durante una rueda de prensa que hubo una “ruptura del control de calidad” por parte del laboratorio con el objetivo de ampliar el margen de beneficios.
En vez de practicar exámenes de forma diaria, el laboratorio empezó a hacerlo de forma semanal, lo que aumentó la probabilidad de un fallo, según Neves.
El centro de análisis médicos fue contratado en diciembre pasado por la Secretaría regional de Salud mediante una licitación para atender el programa de trasplantes.
Tras el estallido del escándalo el viernes pasado, las autoridades sanitarias ordenaron el cierre preventivo del laboratorio, así como la realización de nuevas pruebas de todo el material examinado y una auditoría al sistema público de salud.
De acuerdo con la Secretaría, se trata de una “situación sin precedentes” en el servicio de trasplantes del estado de Río, que desde 2006 ha salvado la vida de más de 16.000 personas.
La ministra de Salud, Nísia Trindade, aseguró el viernes que se brindará toda la asistencia necesaria a las personas afectadas y a sus familias, y recalcó el compromiso del Gobierno con garantizar “la seguridad, eficacia y calidad” del sistema nacional de trasplantes.
