A court in Belarus has recognised as proven the deliberate infection of a child with HIV during pregnancy. At the beginning of June in Belarus a guilty verdict was passed on a 29-year-old HIV-positive woman who deliberately did not take ARV therapy and did not register at the antenatal clinic during pregnancy.
In combination with the infection of one of the partners, the Court qualified the girl’s actions under Part 3 of Article 157 of the Criminal Code (intentional HIV infection of 2 or more persons) and sentenced her to 5 years’ imprisonment. The deadline for appealing the verdict has not yet passed.
